Alex Garland plans low-budget horror tale

Oscar-nominated “Ex Machina” and “Annihilation” writer/director Alex Garland is prepping his next feature – a low-budget horror movie that will be set in the UK.

Empire broke the news, confirming Garland wrote and will direct the project which is still lining up financing. He hopes to start production this spring or summer, depending on cast availability.

Garland tells the outlet: “I wrote a low-budget horror movie, set in the UK. I don’t know if it’s unrealistic or not. Always at this particular moment, a film always feels unrealistic, but then somehow it works out.”

He had been planning a TV series about protests and civil disobedience. However the Black Lives Matter protests following the death of George Floyd, along with the global anger that ensued, made him realise there was no need for the series: “I thought, ‘So now what I’m writing is pointless.’ In a good way. I almost felt glad, weirdly.”

Garland most recently worked on the Hulu limited series “Devs” and also penned “28 Days Later,” “Sunshine,” “Never Let Me Go” and “Dredd”.
