5,601 election law violation cases reported so far: EC

UTV | COLOMBO – The National Elections Commission has so far received a total of 5,601 complaints regarding election law violations and violent activities, the Commission said.

It said 1,042 violent activities had been reported to the National Election Complaint Management Centre while 4,559 complaints had been reported to District Election Complaint Management Centres.

During the 24 hours from Monday (27) to Tuesday at 4.00 p.m, 201 complaints had been reported in connection with election law violations.

Meanwhile, the People’s Action for Free and Fair Elections (PAFFREL) said a total of 270 incidents in relation to violation of health guidelines have been received while 1,056 complaints of carrying out illegal election propaganda have been recorded since the day campaigns for the upcoming General Election were commenced.

According to the complaints received and their observations, 24 cases of assault related to the election campaign were recorded while 68 complaints had been lodged over the misuse of state property for election propaganda.

And also 15 incidents of using state vehicles and 23 incidents of acting in favour of the political parties in breach of their official duties have also been reported while 15 incidents of inconveniencing the public and 14 incidents of unlawful meetings and processions were also reported.
