New guidelines issued for re-opening schools

UTV | COLOMBO – The Ministry of Education has announced new directives to be followed when re-opening schools in the country.

Schools in the country were closed on the 18th of July for the second time this year following a spike in novel coronavirus cases. Academic activities of Grade 11,12 and 13 students resumed on Monday.

However, all schools will be closed once again on Friday, the 31st of July and will re-open on the 10th of August.

The Secretary to the State Ministry of Education, Ranjith Chandrasekera said schools will reopen under several stages after the election.

He said schools with less than 200 students can re-open on the 10th of August after obtaining approval from zonal and provincial educational directors.

However, schools with more than 200 students will be subjected to new regulations.

Accordingly, classes for Grade 1 will be held only on Mondays, for Grade 2 students only on Tuesdays while for Grade 3 students’ classes will held only on Wednesday.

Academic activities for Grade 4 students will be conducted on Thursdays and Fridays.

Classes for Grade 5 students will be held on all five weekdays between 7.30am and 1.30pm.

The Education Ministry also noted that classes for Grade 6 will be held only on Mondays, for Grade 7 students only on Tuesdays while for Grade 8 students’ classes will held only on Wednesday.

Academic activities for students of Grade 9 students will be conducted on Thursdays and Fridays.

Classes for Grade 10, 11, 12 and 13 students will be held on all five weekdays between 7.30am and 3.30pm.

The Education Ministry noted that classes for students of Grade 6, 7, 8 and 9 students will be held between 7.30am and 1.30pm.
