Committee to probe concerns over electricity bills

(UTV | COLOMBO) – Minister of Power and Energy Mahinda Amaraweera says a four-member committee has been appointed to probe concerns surrounding payment of electricity bills for the months of March, April and May and submit recommendations to provide concessions for the public.

Consumers had submitted complaints that electricity bills had skyrocketed due to the imposition of curfew during the relevant months, to mitigate the spread of the COVID-19 pandemic in the island.

Accordingly, Minister Amaraweera stated the matter was subject to lengthy discussions during yesterday’s meeting of the Cabinet of Ministers, where it was decided to take measures to grant the public concessions upon directives issued by the President.

Accordingly, the report compiled by the committee is expected to be submitted next Monday on how said concessions will be granted.
