Arumugan Thondaman’s final rites performed

(UTV | COLOMBO) -The final rites of the late Leader of the Ceylon Workers’ Congress and Minister of Livestock and Rural Community Development Arumugan Thondaman were performed this evening at the Norwood Grounds.

Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa and several Members of the 8th Parliament were in attendance.

Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa, former State Minister Mahindananda Aluthgamage and former Parliamentarians Navin Dissanayake and Rauff Hakeem addressed the funeral gathering.

Thondaman, aged 55, was admitted to a hospital in Talangama last Tuesday after suffering a heart attack where he passed away.

His remains were placed at his residence in Battaramulla and subsequently taken to the Parliamentary complex. President Gotabaya Rajapaksa, Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa and several former Members of Parliament paid their last respects to the late Minister.

His remains were then taken to his residence in Ramboda, Kotmale yesterday and were subsequently placed at the headquarters of the Ceylon Workers’ Congress in Kotagala.

Arumugan Thondaman is a grandson of the founder of the Ceylon Workers’ Congress Saumyamoorthi Thondaman.

Thondaman represented Parliament since 1994 representing the people in estates.

He secured 61,897 votes at the 2015 General Election and was elected to Parliament from the Nuwara-Eliya District.
