“Hellraiser” to continue as an HBO series

(UTV | COLOMBO) – HBO is set to develop a TV series based on the classic horror franchise “Hellraiser” and have set “Halloween” helmer David Gordon Green to direct the pilot and several more initial episodes.

This will mark the first time the franchise’s iconic villain Pinhead, leader of humans turned demons the Cenobites, will appear in his own series. He and his kind live in an extra-dimensional realm and are released through a puzzle box called the Lament Configuration to harvest human souls.

Based on Clive Barker’s novella “The Hellbound Heart,” the series has yielded ten films, three of which went theatrical. The new series surprisingly isn’t a remake, rather an “elevated continuation and expansion” of the property that assumes the past mythology is a given.

The project boasts celebrated alum including Mark Verheiden (“Battlestar Gallactica,” “Daredevil”) and Michael Dougherty (“”Godzilla: King of the Monsters,” “Trick r’ Treat””) as writers and executive producers. Green, Danny McBride Jody Hill, Brandon James, Roy Lee, Dan Farah, Lawrence Kuppin, David Salzman, Eric Gardner will also executive produce.

The project has no relation to the “Hellraiser” film in development at Spyglass that is unrelated to the series.
