Police open fire at vehicle injuring three

The Police opened fire at a vehicle that had violated the islandwide Police curfew and sped past a Police checkpoint in the Egoda- Uyana area in Moratuwa last night.

The Police said the officers at the checkpoint had instructed the vehicle to stop, but it had instead sped past prompting the officers to open fire at around 10.20 p.m.

The vehicle had thereafter sped past another Police checkpoint at the Modara- Aluthpalama area set up by officers of the Panadura- South Police Station.

The officers at the second checkpoint too had opened fire in an attempt to stop the vehicle, which had continued to drive off.

The Police said the vehicle was later found close to the Panadura Hospital, with 3 injured passengers.

The injured were admitted to the Panadura Hospital and are receiving treatment under Police protection, while the driver of the vehicle has been arrested.
