Opposition ‘alarmed’ by the arrival of Chinese

(UTV|COLOMBO) – Parliamentarian Akila Viraj Kariyawasam says the government should take appropriate action pertaining to the arrival of Chinese nationals in the country.

Speaking to media in Colombo, former Minister Kariyawasam noted that without adequate facilities in the country, the government should not allow the influx of foreigners amidst the corona outbreak.

He said those first respondents at the airport and health sector workers must be provident with additional equipment to face the current crisis.

The Parliamentarian reiterated that Doctors have told him, that they are facing a dire situation.

MP Kariyawasam questioned why Chinese nationals continue to come to Sri Lanka, if it is known that the virus could spread through them.

He further pointed out that Sri Lanka doesn’t have the required laboratory facilities, the necessary prevention techniques, or even the surgical masks used to protect from contracting the virus, but are still letting everyone into the country.

The Parliamentarian called for the government to address that fact that there are large amounts of Chinese nationals moving into the country, and more Chinese nationals employed as labourers in domestic projects, travelling to China and back.

He added that medical professionals have claimed that the current preventive measures are inadequate after analysing the situation at the BIA.

Kariyawasam believes that the Ministers and the government must understand the gravity of the situation.
