(UTV | COLOMBO) – When arresting an individual the Police should do it strictly in accordance with the legal process and carry out the action in a very meticulous manner as making an arrest is not a part of the punishment and it can be highly damaging to a person’s reputation and social status, President Gotabaya Rajapaksa has informed the acting IGP through his Secretary Dr. P.B. Jayasundera.
The President has further said that when arresting an individual, Police officers should act independently without any fear or favour and it should be purely a professional decision of the officer or officers involved.
When arresting a Parliamentarian or professionals such as those in the medical field, the Police should give due respect to the suspects.
These measures should apply to all Sri Lankan citizens equally without any differences and they should be followed without subjugating to any situation, outside influence or undue force.
The Secretary to the President has informed acting IGP C.D. Wickremaratne to seek the Attorney General’s opinion when necessary and carry out duties in a very prudent and far-sighted manner.
