Garbage dump collapse kills at least 28 in Meethotamulla

(UDHAYAM, COLOMBO) – A 300ft-high (91m) pile of rotting debris collapsed on homes in Sri Lanka’s Capital, Colombo, killing at 28 people with many others missing.

At least 100 homes were ripped from their foundations and crashed into neighbouring homes.

President Maithripala Sirisena ordered several hundred troops to assist the fire department in searching for survivors.

About 800 tonnes of waste were added to the Meethotamulla dump every day.

Last month, a landslide at a rubbish dump in the Ethiopian Capital, Addis Ababa, killed at least 113 people.
