(UTV|COLOMBO) – United National Party (UNP) Deputy Leader, Housing and Cultural Affairs Minister Sajith Premadasa says he has formally requested UNP leader and Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe in writing to announce the party’s Presidential candidate, without further delay.

Speaking at a ceremony to vest with the public two Uda Gammana villages in Tissamaharama, yesterday, the Minister said he strongly believed the delay in naming the UNP presidential candidate was detrimental to the interests of the party.

The Minister said delaying the naming of the party’s candidate was also harmful to the country and a blow to democracy. According to the release : Premadasa said he has always acted while respecting democracy and if there was any issue in nominating him as the UNP’s presidential candidate then the party’s Working Committee and Parliamentary group should convene and decide on the matter.

Premadasa added that he had informed the party leader in writing to announce the UNP candidate for the upcoming Presidential election at the earliest.
