Sri Lanka seeks improved-ties with Indonesia

(UTV|COLOMBO) – Sri Lanka has expressed interest in further strengthening the multi-faceted relations which exist between Sri Lanka and Indonesia.

Ambassador Yasoja Gunasekera presented Letters of Credence to President Joko Widodo of the Republic of Indonesia, at the Merdeka Palace in Jakarta accrediting her as the Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Sri Lanka to Indonesia.

The ceremony entailed the presentation of credentials, followed by a Guard of Honour and the playing of the national anthem of Sri Lanka.

Ambassador Gunasekera conveyed to President Widodo warm greetings from President Maithripala Sirisena and expressed Sri Lanka’s interest in further strengthening the multi-faceted relations which exist between the two countries, particularly in the areas of trade, investment, tourism and economic cooperation.

After the Ceremony, the Ambassador had an audience with President Widodo and Minister of Foreign Affairs Retno Marsudi on bilateral issues.

Ambassador Gunasekera joined the Sri Lanka Foreign Service in 1996 and served as Director General South Asia and SAARC in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs immediately prior to her appointment in Jakarta.

She has served in Sri Lanka Overseas Missions in India, China, the United States of America and Bangladesh, prior to taking up responsibilities in Jakarta. Ambassador Gunasekera holds a Masters Degree in Foreign Affairs and Trade from Monash University in Australia and a LLB Honours Degree in Law from Warwick University in the United Kingdom. She is a past pupil of C.M.S. Ladies’ College, Colombo.
