“Gotabaya’s pledge on Easter attacks commission, a mere pledge” – Cardinal

(UTV|COLOMBO) – Colombo Archbishop Malcolm Cardinal Ranjith yesterday said that presidential candidate Gotabaya Rajapaksa does not hold any power and people in power should do justice instead in order to reveal the truth to comfort the hearts of the people who were affected by the Easter Sunday attacks.

Though former Defence Secretary Gotabaya Rajapaksa announced that he would appoint an independent commission to inquire the Easter Sunday attacks, they are mere pledges, he said.

The Colombo Archbishop added that the pledges made by those who are in the Opposition will not console people who were affected by the carnage.

“The people have a clear understanding about the pledges made by those who are in power and those who are trying to gain power throughout the history,” he said

He emphasised that an independent commission should be appointed before the upcoming election. All parties are concerned on grabbing power nothing else, he said

The Colombo Archbishop made these remarks following a visit to the Temple of Tooth with Italian Archbishop and president of the Italian Episcopal Conference Cardinal Gualtiero Bassetti

Pointing out that the report of the commission appointed by the president on the attacks has not been publicized, the Cardinal said that, he has little faith regarding the murders that occurred throughout history either.

Cardinal Ranjith further requested that an independent commission that can take decisions be appointed to probe the Easter Sunday attacks.
