Navy apprehends 4 Indian fishermen for fishing in Lankan waters

(UTV|COLOMBO) – Four Indian fishermen along with a trawler engaged in illegal fishing in Sri Lankan territorial waters were apprehended by the Sri Lanka Navy.

The apprehension was made by the Northern Naval Command in the seas, Northwest of Delft Lighthouse. Subsequently, the Indian fishers and the trawler were brought to the naval base SLNS Elara

The apprehended fishers are in the ages of 20, 30 and 58 and after a medical test they are due to be handed over to the Assistant Director of Fisheries- Jaffna for onward legal action.

Due to constant patrol carried out by the Sri Lanka Navy in order to protect the fish and marine resources belongs to Sri Lanka, poaching attempts by Indian fishers in Sri Lankan waters have been lessened.
