Russia ready to assist Sri Lanka’s power sector

(UTV|COLOMBO) – The Russian Government is ready to extend assistance towards further development of the electricity sector, Russian Ambassador Yuru Materiy said, when he called on Power, Energy and Business Development Minister Ravi Karunanayake at the Ministry complex yesterday (07).

He said Sri Lanka occupied a commendable position among Asian countries as regards electricity generation and supply, adding that he will encourage the Russian government and Russian companies to invest in establishing coal and natural gas electricity plants in Sri Lanka.

A Power, Energy and Business Development Ministry statement said the discussion which aimed to further strengthen bilateral relations between Russia and Sri Lanka paid special attention towards electricity generation in Sri Lanka.

The statement said the Russian Ambassador who paid attention to Sri Lanka’s diversion towards LNG and coal said promotion of these two sources of energy by Russia would be of mutual benefit to both countries.
