Amendment to Bribery Act at final stages

(UTV|COLOMBO) – The Director General of the Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption Sarath Jayamanne says the drafting of laws against bribery and corruption has neared its final stages.

Mr. Jayamanne speaking to a prominent online news portal in the isle has stated that the draft will be subject to discussion on the 8th of August when the Sectorial Oversight Committee convene in Parliament.

He noted the bribery act, the assets and liabilities act and the bribery commission act had not been amended in 25 to 30 years stating that therefore Commission had drafted the amendments and have sent it to the Legal Draftsman’s Department.

Jayamanne stated the Legal Draftsman will incorporate the amendments to a legislative bill adding they hoped that the Sectorial Oversight Committee will discussed the amendments proposed to the bribery acts when it convened on the 8th of August.

 He noted that bribery laws applicable to the private sector will also be amended.

Jayamanne expressed hope to amend laws pertaining bribery and corruption in a way that its presence is felt also in the private sector stressing that there was no power given for prevention activities in the existing legislation.
