Verdict on hearing petition against death penalty today

(UTv|COLOMBO) -A five member bench of the Court of Appeal will deliver its verdict on the hearing of the petition filed by journalist Malinda Seneviratne against the President’s decision to reinstate the death penalty, today.

The petition was last taken up for consideration on the 5th of July.

The bench is due to deliver the decision on whether the petition will be examined or whether it will be withdrawn after considering the preliminary objections filed by the Attorney General and whether notices will be issued to the Respondents cited in the petition summoning them before Court.

The petition is being considered before a five member bench headed by Chairman of the Appeals Court Yasantha Kodagoda.

The petition against the death penalty was filed by journalist Malinda Seneviratne on the 28th of June.

The Supreme Court however issued an order preventing the death penalty from being enforced till the 30th of October.
