Thrilling Army-Police duels rock Intermediates boxing meet

(UTV|COLOMBO) – Army and Police pugilists engaged in some thrilling duels on the second day of competition at the Intermediates tournament conducted by the Boxing Association of Sri Lanka at Royal MAS Arena yesterday.

Sri Lanka Youth boxer J.A.V. Kavishan representing Police upset Novices winner Pathum Suranga Fernando of Army in a thrilling Bantam weight (52-56kg) quarter-final while young soldier W.M.S. Kumara knocked out Policeman W.N.B.K. Perera in the third round of a Light weight (56-60kg) bout.

Army southpaw Fernando displayed superb ringcraft to win the opening round against Kavishan but the 19-year-old former Vidyaratne Horana schoolboy bounced back with powerful rights to send his opponent backpeddling and earn a 3-2 split decision in a closely contested fight.

Policeman Perera appeared to be in control of the fight before 27-year-old Kumara of Sinha regiment produced a deadly right hook to send his adversary sprawling to the canvas.

Another southpaw, former Gamini CC, Ingiriya boxer P.A.R. Prasanna representing Police also impressed winning a unanimous decision over Peradeniya BC’s K.G.K.A. Kapukotuwa to book his berth in the Bantam weight (52-56kg) semifinals, which will be worked off on Thursday from 5pm at the same venue.

Bantam weight (52-56kg): K.G.K.M. Karunasinghe (Siluweta) bt H.I. Chamara (Army) on points, A.P.J. Kumara (Navy) bt R.W.M.H.P.R. Mendis (SLNDR) abandoned round one, P.A.R. Prasanna (Police) bt K.G.K.A. Kapukotuwa (Peradeniya BC) on points, D.M. Dasanayake (Army Reds) bt S.M.N. Aponso (Army Archers) on points;

Fly weight (49-52kg): E.D.P.D. Vidyalankara (Peradeniya BC) bt H.P.M. Handuwala (Vidl) on points, K.G.G. Chathuranga (Navy) bt A.M.S. Pushpakumara (Air Force) on points, J.P.M. Jayawardhana (Army) bt A.D.S.D. Prasad (Army Reds) on points, M.M. Udayakumara (Army Archers) bt R.M.M. Abeyrathna (Army Blues) on points;

Light Welter weight (60-64kg): J.A.V. Kavishan (Police) bt P.S.P.S. Fernando (Army) on points, Y. Kiritharan (Peradeniya BC) bt B.A.S. Perera (Navy) Referee Stopped Contest;
