“Godzilla” sequel to finish with soft USD 400 million

(UTV|COLOMBO) – Warners had high hopes for its Monsterverse films. 2014’s “Godzilla” reboot pulled in a fairly healthy $529 million worldwide from a production budget of $160 million.

Then came “Kong: Skull Island” in 2017 which grossed $566.6 million worldwide from a $185 million production budget. Essentially on par with the first and things looked good.

The hope was last month’s “Godzilla: King of the Monsters” would equal or surpass them. Now though, based on current international box office totals, the film is reportedly on track to finish its worldwide theatrical run around the $400 million mark from a production budget of $170 million. That’s not so good and marks the first of the Monsterverse films to suffer a loss.

The film has racked up $341.9 million so far, with just over a third of that coming from China. The next film in the series, “Godzilla vs. Kong,” has already wrapped filming. Slated for March next year, there has already been recent talk about a potential short delay.
