Poson to be declared a National Festival

(UTV|COLOMBO) – The Poson Festival will be proclaimed as a National Festival while the annual Mihintale Poson Perahera will be offered state patronage.

Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe has decided to frame the necessary legislation to facilitate this in response to a request made by Mihintale Raja Maha Viharadhipati and Trustee Ven. Walawahangunawewe Dhammaratana Nayake Thera on June 16, said a statement issued by the Prime Minister’s Office yesterday.

The statement said the Prime Minister is due to appoint a high level committee to arrange a strategy to implement the requests made by Ven. Dhammaratana Nayake Thera including the naming of the Mihintale Sacred Area as a National Heritage and regarding the Poson Festival.

The Prime Minister has instructed Agriculture, Livestocks Development, Fisheries and Water Resources Development Minister P. Harrison and Womens and Childrens Affairs and Dry Zone Development Minister Mrs Chandrani Bandara to Co-ordinate this programme the statement added.
