(UTV|COLOMBO) – One of the most expected moves on the film release calendar has finally happened.
For many months, 20th Century Fox has had James Gray’s sci-fi drama “Ad Astra” starring Brad Pitt set for a May 24th 2019 release. Up until today, it has remained there even as the film has yet to release any marketing material whatsoever beyond a single image.
The film follows astronaut Roy McBride (Pitt) who travels to the outer edges of the solar system to find his missing father and unravel a mystery that threatens the survival of our planet. Tommy Lee Jones, Ruth Negga, Jamie Kennedy and Donald Sutherland co-star.
There was talk of the film screening at Cannes in a few weeks but Gray shot down those reports and indicated at the start of the year the film wouldn’t be finished until at least early May – and that assumed there weren’t any hiccups in post-production and the complicated visual effects could be completed quickly.
Combined with the fallout of Fox being acquired by Disney, it seemed inevitable the film will be delayed until sometime in the Fall and potentially debut on the Venice, Telluride, Toronto early Fall film festival circuit.
Today they made it official, yanking the film from that long-held Memorial Day slot. They have yet to schedule a new date and aren’t expected to do so until Gray is finished with the movie. Fox’s new owner Disney already has “Aladdin” set to open that weekend so isn’t going to be too worried.
