(UTV|COLOMBO) – Acclaimed “Short Term 12” director Destin Daniel Cretton has been set to helm “Shang-Chi” for Marvel Studios.
Essentially a spin on the 1970s TV series “Kung Fu,” the comic follows a master of fighting who eventually gains the ability to create an infinite amount of replicas of himself.
The character has been a member of The Avengers and Heroes for Hire, the latter alongside fellow kung fu masters Daughters of the Dragon.
Chinese-American scribe Dave Callaham (“Wonder Woman 1984”) is penning the script and will update the character for modern audiences. Marvel is said to be planning on assembling a largely Asian-American and Asian cast.
Cretton – who beat out the likes of Justin Tipping, Alan Yang and Deborah Chow for the gig – is currently directing “Just Mercy” with Brie Larson and Michael B. Jordan.
