Mahershala Ali goes sci-fi in “Sovereign”

(UTV|COLOMBO) – Days after winning his second Oscar for his work in “Green Book,” Mahershala Ali has joined the independent sci-fi feature “Sovereign” for Entertainment One and 21 Laps Entertainment.

Specifics of the plot are under wraps. Marc Munden (TV’s “National Treasure,” “Utopia”) will direct from a screenplay by Scott Beck and Bryan Woods (“A Quiet Place”) who’ve re-written earlier drafts by Greg Weidman, Geoff Tock and Jack Thorne.

“Stranger Things” and “Arrival” producing trio Shawn Levy, Dan Levine, and Dan Cohen are also onboard. Ali is coming off recent screen appearances in “Alita: Battle Angel,” “Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse” and the third season of HBO’s “True Detective”.
