A decisive meeting between President and UPFA today

(UTV|COLOMBO) – A decisive meeting between President Maithripala Sirisena and the United People’s Freedom Alliance (UPFA) is scheduled to be held tonight (14) following the Supreme Court ruling that of Mahinda Rajapaksa’s petition against the Interim Injunction order given by the Court of Appeal restraining him and his Cabinet from functioning.

The Supreme Court is scheduled to hear the petition filed against the Interim Injunction order issued by the Court of Appeal challenging the authority of Mahinda Rajapaksa holding the Office of Prime Minister and his Cabinet.

The first hearing of the petition took place on 03 December where an Interim Injunction order temporarily suspending the functions of the Prime Minister, Cabinet of Ministers, Deputy Ministers, and State Ministers, was issued.

During the second hearing of the petition on 12 December, the Appeals Court announced that the Quo Warranto Writ Petition filed by 122 Parliamentarians, challenging the authority of Rajapaksa and his Cabinet will be taken up for hearing once again before Court on 16, 17, and 18 January 2019.

The Court further noted that the Interim Injunction order will remain in effect until a judgment is issued on the petition.

Meanwhile a motion was tabled at the Supreme Court, calling for the petition to be heard before a five-member Judge Bench.
