Canada urges all parties to uphold Constitution and refrain from violence

(UTV|COLOMBO) – Canada has stated that the Government of Sri Lanka needs to take concrete steps to meet its commitments to its own people-and the international community-with respect to accountability, transitional justice and ending impunity.

The Canadian High Commissioner to Sri Lanka and Ambassador to the Maldives, David McKinnon, stressed that Canada is very concerned by the recent events in Sri Lanka and is closely monitoring the situation.

“Respect for the rule of law is a cornerstone of democracy. We urge all parties to uphold Sri Lanka’s Constitution and refrain from violence. The Government of Sri Lanka needs to take concrete steps to meet its commitments to its own people-and the international community-with respect to accountability, transitional justice and ending impunity,” the Commissioner said.
