(UTV|COLOMBO) – Although the Department of Railways refute the claims regarding an inconsistent increase in several fares following the recent train ticket revisions by 15 per cent, commuters have complained that some train ticket fares have gone up by as much as 30 to 40 per cents.
The new train fares, revised under the Budget Proposal for 2018, were effective from Monday (01) onwards.
It is reported that even though the minimum ticket fare has not been changed under the new revision, the maximum distance that could be travelled with a minimum fare ticket has been reduced from 9 kilometres to 7 kilometres.
Thereby, when increasing train fares by 15 per cent, the calculation for the number of kilometres has been revised.
Reportedly, the season ticket price which was Rs. 420 earlier has been increased to Rs. 720, while the Rs. 600 and Rs. 3360 season ticket prices have gone up to Rs. 960 and Rs. 4,320 respectively.
