Troops begin supply of drinking water to over 45,000 drought-affected Wanni residents

(UTV|COLOMBO) – Approximately 45,000 drought-affected villagers, resident in the areas of responsibility of the 56 Division Headquarters of the Security Force Headquarters- Wanni in Vavuniya are continuing to receive drinking water, supplied by Army troops since Thursday (20) after the serious nature of the prevailing drought was brought to the attention of the troops serving the area, the Army Media Unit said on Monday (24).

On being informed of the severe shortage, Major General Prabath Dematanpitiya, General Officer Commanding (GOC), 56 Division implemented a plan to supply water using own water bowsers of the Army for the purpose. Accordingly, troops of the 561 and the 563 Brigades are currently engaged in distribution of drinking water to all those who are living in those areas.
