Buddhism given pride of place – Min. Kiriella

UTV | COLOMBO – The Government has promised to present a new Draft Constitution to Parliament by next month.

Leader of the House, Minister Lakshman Kiriella said yesterday (7), he expects to present the draft of the new Constitution to Parliament ‘soon- probably in October.’

Kiriella also allayed fears about the position given to Buddhism in the new Constitution. He said once the draft Constitution is presented to Parliament, the public could see for themselves the pride of place given to Buddhism in the Constitution adding that it was the JO that was arousing unwarranted fears in the minds of the public with regard to the place given to Buddhism.

Kiriella, responding to a question posed by Parliamentarian Udaya Gammanpila, assured that the Government is bound to protect Buddhism.
