IGP & NPC advised to solve all issues in 14 days

UTV | COLOMBO – The Constitutional Council has advised the National Police Commission and the Inspector General of Police to resolve all issues and concerns, between the factions, within 14 days and report back.

The Constitutional Council informed of the decision following discussions with the IGP and members of the Police Commission.

The Council had focused its attention on indifferences which arose between the Police Commission and the IGP over the past few days, and accordingly had summoned the two parties for deliberations yesterday.

Chairman of the Constitutional Council Speaker of House Karu Jayasuriya said independent commissions were established under the 19th Amendment to the Constitution to ensure fundamental institutions which are integral to the society are not influenced by politicians.

The Office of the Speaker of House noted yesterday’s discussion also focused on the manner in which new members will be appointed to commissions when the present terms of independent commissions expire.
