Female inmates’ protest launched against transferring inmates to Angunukolapelessa Prison

(UTV|COLOMBO) – The reason behind the protest launched by a group of female inmates at the Welikada Prison is the Government’s decision to transfer several inmates from the Welikada Prison to the Angunukolapelessa Prison, the Prison internal sources revealed.

It is reported that the interactions with outsiders will be minimal at the Angunukolapelessa Prison.

Around 25 female inmates of the Welikada Prison had got onto the prison roof and staged a protest on Monday morning (13) against a decision taken by the Prison Authorities to limit the food items allowed to be brought from outside and demanding to expedite the hearing of their cases.

Two prison inmates who were protesting on the roof of Welikada prison were admitted to hospital following a clash between two groups of woman inmates.

The injured were admitted to Prison Hospital yesterday evening.
