UPDATE: Appeal Court sentenced Gnanasara Thero to 6-years Rigorous Imprisonment

(UTV|COLOMBO) – UPDATE: The Appeal Court on Wednesday (08) sentenced the General Secretary of the Bodu Bala Sena (BBS) Organisation Venerable Galagoda Aththe Gnanasara Thero, to six-years Rigorous Imprisonment (RI) for contempt of Court.

The Court has ordered SI Welikada to take immediate custody Gnanasara Thero who is currently at Ward 5 of Sri Jayewardenepura Hospital.

The Thero was hospitalised for a surgery on Tuesday (07). Application by his lawyers to have his arrest deferred also rejected by the Court.

(UTV|COLOMBO) – The Appeal Court verdict on charges of contempt of Court against the General Secretary of the Bodu Bala Sena (BBS) Organisation Venerable Galagoda Aththe Gnanasara Thero will be announced today (08).

Homagama Magistrate Ranga Dissanayake filed a Contempt of Court action in the Court of Appeal against Gnanasara Thero, seeking the Appeal Court’s constitutional jurisdiction against Gnanasara Thero’s alleged offensive behaviour in the Homagama Magistrate’s Court, amounting to Contempt of Court, on 25 January 2016.

On 25 January 2016, Gnanasara Thero began to address the Open Court after the Court hearing pertaining to the disappearance of Journalist Prageeth Ekneligoda was concluded. Later on, the Thera was arrested by Police on the charges of Contempt of Court, obstructing Court proceedings and intimidating a public servant.
