(UTV|COLOMBO) – Germany on Monday (25) emphasised that the recent remarks made by a senior Buddhist Monk counselling former Defence Secretary Gotabhaya Rajapaksa linking Adolf Hitler, one of history’s most notorious dictators as “Irresponsible and plain stupid.”

In a Twitter statement, the German Ambassador to Sri Lanka Joern Rohde stressed that he fully agrees with President Maithripala Sirisena and Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe’s condemnation of the “Outrageous remarks” made by the Venerable Wendaruwe Upali Thero about the need for a Hitler in Sri Lanka.

“The remarks only demonstrate that wearing a robe does not prevent individuals from issuing irresponsible and plain stupid statements. We need more democracy- not less- all over the world,” the German Ambassador added.

In a sermon at the birthday celebration of Gotabhaya Rajapaksa, the Anunayake of Asgiriya Chapter Venerable Wendaruwe Upali Thero urged Rajapaksa to follow the German Dictator Hitler and take over the country even if it means establishing military rule.

Adolf Hitler was the leader of Nazi Germany from 1934 to 1945. He initiated fascist policies that led to World War II and the deaths of at least 11 million people, including the mass murder of an estimated 6 million Jewish people.
