(UTV|COLOMBO) – Moving 10 positions up from last year’s rank position of the World Press Freedom Index, Sri Lanka was placed 131, this year, the Reporters Without Borders or Reporters Sans Frontières (RSF) said.
Norway and Sweden is ranked first and second and North Korea is ranked in the 180th place.
180 countries were graded into five categories according to a colour code depicting each country’s media freedom.
The five colours are white, yellow, orange, red and black, but however Sri Lanka is still placed in the red boundary.
The countries which were subjected to the ranking system were ranked by taking into account a countries media freedom, independence of media, judicial frame and the safety provided for journalists.
Looking at the World Press Freedom Index ranks achieved by other South Asian apart from Sri Lanka, Bhutan is placed 94, Nepal is placed 106, Afganistan is placed 118, Maldives is placed 120, India is placed 138, Pakistan is placed 139 and Bangladesh is placed 146.
