Navy accused of injuring Tamil Nadu fishermen

(UTV|COLOMBO) – Fishermen from Tamil Nadu have accused the Sri Lankan navy of attacking them and damaging their fishing equipment, while they were fishing in Palk Strait.

A Tamil Nadu Fisheries Department official has said five fishermen from Nagapattinam district were injured in the attack by Sri Lankan navy personnel off the Vedaranyam coast, the Press Trust of India reported.

The fishermen from Nagore in Nagapattinam district sustained injuries in the attack late on Wednesday night near Thopputhrai, Fisheries Department Assistant Director K Gangadharan said.

The Sri Lankan Navy men have allegedly snatched the fish catch and GPS equipment and also snapped the fishing nets.

The injured fishermen, who returned to the shore early today, have been admitted to Nagapattinam General Hospital.

Gangadharan, who visited the fishermen in hospital, said a complaint has been lodged with the Coastal Security Group police and fisheries department officials.
