Essential commodities will be sold by Lanka Sathosa at relief rates for the New Year [VIDEO]

(UTV|COLOMBO) – Lanka Sathosa has taken initiatives to provide essential commodities to the people at relief rates during the New Year season. This has been mentioned by its Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Mohammed Farooz. He said that the consumers could purchase these goods at relief rates from about the 400 outlets located islandwide as well as from mobile trucks.

He made these observations at a media conference held on Thursday (29).

Chief Executive Officer of the Lanka Sathosa Mohamed Farooz assured that there would be no shortcomings of these essential commodities. He said that these could be purchased at relief rates from the Sathosa network. In additional mobile trucks would be selling these commodities at selected populated places such as near Railway Stations and at bus stands next week.

Marketing Chief of the Hector Kobbekaduwa Agrarian Research Institute Duminda Priyadarshana said that the rice stocks that they would be receiving is sufficient for a period of eight months. As such a dearth in rice cannot be expected. Imported rice is now available in the market at a low cost. The Government has decided to extend the tax relief for one month.

Director of the Ministry of Industries and Commerce Indika Ranatunge said that a request has been made by companies to increase the price of a kilogramme of milk powder by 100 rupees. But the final decision has not yet been received. She said that the price of milk powder may not increase. Since the price of gas had not been increased for the past two-years, the two companies had sought an increase seeking some relief for them. But she added that a decision in this respect too has been taken.
