Standard quality helmets compulsory from 1st of April

(UDHAYAM, COLOMBO) – Wearing of standard quality helmets by motorcyclists will become mandatory from 1st of April, Minister of Transport and Civil Aviation Nimal Siripala De Silva said.

The initiative will be supported by the Sri Lanka Standard Institute and the Consumer Affairs Authority (CAA).

According to the minister, 215 had died and 400 were critically injured during 2015/ 2016 by unidentified road accidents daily.

He was addressing a ceremony to award compensation for the family members of victims of road accidents held on 30th January at the ministry.

On this occasion, 18 critically injured victims were paid Rs.1.8 million while Rs. 2.3 million were paid to the families of the dead.
