Navy apprehends 5 persons engaged in illegal fishing

(UTV|COLOMBO) – Based on information received by the Navy, a group of naval personnel attached to the Eastern Naval Command apprehended 05 persons for engaging in illegal fishing practices in Uppural, Trincomalee recently.

Along with the persons, a dinghy, 5 oxygen cylinders, 2 pairs of diving fins, 3 diving masks, 49 sticks of water gel, 9 non-electric detonators and a 4.5-foot-long safety fuse were also seized. The suspects, dinghy and other fishing gear were handed over to the Assistant Director of Fisheries of Trincomalee for onward legal action.

Meanwhile, naval troops attached to the Eastern Naval Command also managed to recover 3 unauthorized fishing nets during a search conducted in the lagoon area of Batticaloa. The unauthorized fishing nets which are 150 feet in length were handed over to the Assistant Directorate of Fisheries of Batticaloa for onward action.
