Mirijjawila protest: 25 further remanded, 4 out on bail

(UDHAYAM, COLOMBO) – 25 suspects arrested for behaving in an unruly manner during the opening ceremony of the Southern Development Project at the Mirijjawila investment promotion zone, have been further remanded.

The suspects were remanded till the 13th of February by the Hambantota Magistrate’s Court today. Meanwhile 4 others individuals arrested and remanded on the same charges were released on three surety bails of 100,000 rupees each.

The order was issued by Hambantota Magistrate Manjula Karunaratne. A tense situation broke out during the opening of the Hambantota Investment Zone in Mirijjawila last week leading to clashes.

Over 50 individuals were arrested over the incident. Another group of suspects were released on bail when the case was last taken up for hearing.
