Navy arrests 7 persons for engaging in illegal fishing

(UTV|COLOMBO) – Seven persons engaged in illegal fishing activities at two separate locations were arrested by the Navy.

Accordingly, naval personnel attached to the Northwestern Naval Command arrested 5 persons for engaging in illegal fishing using unauthorized fishing nets in the sea area of Mollikulam. Along with the persons a dinghy, 4 unauthorized fishing nets and 10 kg of illegally caught fish were taken into custody. The arrested persons and fishing gear were handed over to the Assistant Director of Fisheries in Puttalam for onward action.

Meanwhile, naval personnel belonging to the North Central Naval Command apprehended 2 more persons engaged in illegal fishing practices using banned fishing nets in the seas off Erumathivu Island in Kilinochchi. Naval personnel also seized a dinghy and a 1,000 m long fishing net along with the suspects. The apprehended persons and their items used for fishing were handed over to the Nachchikuda Police for further investigations.
