Navy nabs 18 local fishermen engaged in illegal fishing

(UDHAYAM, COLOMBO) – Naval personnel attached to the Eastern Naval Command apprehended 18 local fishermen engaged in illegal fishing practices using unauthorised fishing nets, in the waters off Trincomalee on Monday (03).

Accordingly, 10 fishermen along with 2 dinghies, 2 outboard motors, two 225m long unauthorised fishing nets and 1 diving mask were taken into Naval custody for engaging in illegal fishing practices in the sea area off Elizabeth Point, Trincomalee.

Meanwhile, the Naval personnel nabbed another 08 local fishermen while engaging in illegal fishing in the waters off Norway Point, Trincomalee. A dinghy, outboard motor and 225m long fishing net used for fishing activities were also arrested.

The arrested fishermen and fishing gear were handed over to the Assistant Fisheries Director, Trincomalee for onward legal action.
