UNICEF’s support to reconstruct disaster-affected schools

(UDHAYAM, COLOMBO) – The United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) has planned to commence a program to rehabilitate schools and pre-schools in floods and landslide affected areas in several Districts.

The program to be commenced with the financial assistance of the Government of Norway with the coordination of Ministries of Education and Provincial Councils and Local Government will be implemented in Kalutara, Ratnapura, Galle, and Matara Districts.

A special discussion in this regard was held recently at Kalutara District Secretariat with the participation of Norwegian Ambassador Thorbjoin Gustadsether, UNICEF Representative in Sri Lanka Tim Sutton, and District Secretary of Kalutara U. D. C. Jayalal.

According to the District Secretary, about 133 schools have been destroyed in Kalutara District due to the recent disaster situation.
