Navy arrests 5 Indian fishermen for illegal fishing in Sri Lankan waters

(UDHAYAM, COLOMBO) – Naval personnel attached to a Fast Attack Craft belonging to the Northern Naval Command arrested 5 Indian poachers along with a fishing trawler engaged in illegal fishing practices in Sri Lankan territorial waters West of Delft Island Sunday morning (18).

Having brought the arrested fishermen, fishing trawler and their fishing gear to the Naval base, SLNS Elara in Kareitivu, they are due to be handed over to the Jaffna Assistant Director of Fisheries for onward legal action.

Meanwhile, on the same day, Navy rendered assistance to another Indian fishing trawler in distress in close quarters of the IMBL Northwest of Analativu Island, as sea water trickled into the vessel making a panic-stricken situation.

Accordingly, Fast Attack Craft on patrol were rushed to the scene to control the damage and arrest the flood situation in the Indian trawler. There were 3 Indian fishermen aboard the distressed trawler. After swiftly undertaking repair work to the damaged trawler by the Navy, it was handed over to another Indian trawler close by to be flanked.
