US Navy joins Sri Lanka Marines for disaster relief mission

(UDHAYAM, COLOMBO) – Over 100 United States (US) Navy personnel who had arrived onboard USS Lake Erie joined hands with Sri Lanka Navy Marines, for post Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Relief support efforts in Colombo, Galle and Matara Districts on Monday (12).

A joint disaster relief contingent of 50 SLN Marines and 119 US Naval personnel engaged in levee repair activities in the Matara District closely collaborating with the Matara Divisional Irrigation Engineer’s Office.

Another 21 SLN Marines along with 72 US Naval personnel in coordination with the Galle and Colombo branches of the Sri Lanka Red Cross Society (SLRCS), rendered assistance in cleaning of wells, purification and rehabilitation efforts in Galle and selected regions in Colombo District.

USS Lake Erie arrived at the Colombo Port on Sunday (11) on a two week, post disaster relief support mission.
