(UDHAYAM, COLOMBO) – The government is repairing 7000 agro wells and doing their best to save the crops said Director General Irrigation Department Saman Weerasinghe.
Addressing a press conference in Colombo he said that due to the Meteorology Department informing them earlier we knew of this situation from before. Therefore we cultivated only 59, 39,000 acres of paddy while 19000 acres of additional crops were cultivated.
We need another 1225 agro wells. The water levels in the reservoirs are 23 percent. When water is provided for cultivation the balance left would be 10 percent. The water will be released on a staggered basis.
