Navy foils illegal migration attempt, suspect into custody

(UDHAYAM, COLOMBO) – On receipt of an intelligence tip-off to the Navy, a group of Naval personnel attached to the North Central Naval Command apprehended a suspect who was on an illegal migration attempt to India via sea. The apprehension was made in Thalvupadu general area, Talaimannar on Sunday (04) and the suspect was handed over to the Mannar Police for onward legal action.

Further investigation into the incident revealed that, the suspect who was a captive imprisoned at the Anuradhapura Prison, had been escaped from the prison on May 06.

The Navy urges the general public not to involve in high risk sea-borne migration to overseas countries based on false information provided by human smugglers and reiterated that such attempts would finally end up behind bars.

Further the Navy reminds of its strong network of intelligence and regular patrols in place to nip such illegal migration efforts in the bud, as the country is following very strict measures to curb such attempts.
