T20 World Cup: Sri Lanka to take on Australia in Perth

(UTV | COLOMBO) –Sri Lanka will take on hosts and Defending Champions Australia in a Super 12 stage encounter of the 2022 Twenty20 World Cup in Perth today.


The Group 1 encounter is scheduled to get underway at 4.30pm Sri Lanka.

Sri Lanka in their opening Super 12 stage game thrashed Ireland by 9 wickets in Hobart.

Batting first Ireland posted just 128/8 in 20 overs.

Sri Lanka chased down the target in 15 overs losing just one wicket.

Sri Lanka is now behind only New Zealand on the points table.

New Zealand inflicted a morale shattering 89-run defeat on Australia in Sydney on Saturday.

Following the loss, Australians are expected to come hard at the Lankans in Perth today.

Meanwhile, Pathum Nissanka and Pramod Madushan who were nursing injuries have passed their respective fitness tests ahead of today’s game and will be available for selection.

Sri Lanka has also drafted in three more players to the World Cup squad as cover following injuries to several players.

Sri Lanka Cricket announced that Niroshan Dickwella, Asitha Fernando and Matheesha Pathirana will leave for Australia.

They are expected to train separately and will be part of the squad if needed arises.

Sri Lanka has three more games besides today’s encounter to qualify for the semi-final of the T20 World Cup.
