“Amsterdam” To Lose Nearly $100M?

(UTV | COLOMBO) – Following the film’s rather disastrous $6.5 million domestic and $10 million worldwide opening at the box-offfice, David O. Russell’s all-star adult-skewing absurdist period comedy “Amsterdam” is reportedly on track to lose nearly $100 million according to Deadline.

Armed with an $80 million budget and an estimated $70 million global P&A spend, the film is reportedly headed for a projected global gross of just $35 million. After home ancillary and international TV revenue is accounted for, they indicate “Amsterdam” will lose around $97 million.

Combined with poor reviews, which have sunk its award chances, this is not good news for New Regency who is said to have fully financed the project as per its deal with Disney/20th Century Studios.

Christian Bale, Margot Robbie, John David Washington, Rami Malek, Anya Taylor-Joy, Taylor Swift, Michael Shannon and Robert De Niro star in the 1930s-set film with a change of location shoot from Boston to LA during the pandemic allegedly pushing what was a $50 million budget film to become an $80 million one.

The film’s disappointing opening is also seen as another blow for non-tentpole, adult-skewing films which have been having a much harder time at the box-office in the wake of the pandemic. Still, one weekend does not tell a whole story and the film could turn things around should an audience embrace it.
