Egg price revision within two weeks

(UTV | COLOMBO) – The Ministry of Trade, Commerce and Food Security says the Maximum Retail Price imposed on eggs will be revised within the next two weeks.

The Trade Ministry has said it will also consider the packaging costs when determining the prices of eggs sold in supermarkets.

Accordingly, the prices are expected to be announced separately for red and white eggs.

The Ministry of Trade said recommendations regarding packaging guidelines are being considered at present through the Consumer Affairs Authority.

The Trade Ministry imposed a MRP of Rs. 43 for a white egg and Rs. 45 for a brown egg earlier this month.

Egg Producers then opposed the decision and refused to release egg stocks to the market.

Accordingly, a shortage of eggs was reported in the past few days.

Subsequently, egg producers claimed that Minister of Trade Nalin Fernando agreed to increase the price of an egg to Rs. 50.

Meanwhile, Minister of Agriculture Mahinda Amaraweera also requested the CAA to grant permission to producers to sell an egg for Rs. 50.

Trade Minister Nalin Fernando said however, a decision will be taken based on the production cost in future.
