Medicine imports can’t have ‘bureaucratic red tape’ – Sajith

(UTV | COLOMBO) – Leader of the Opposition Sajith Premadasa says they hope to import necessary medical supplies without any obstacle or ‘bureaucratic red tape’.

Speaking in Parliament today, MP Premadasa said his attempts to provide for the public have been stalled in the past as well.

The Opposition Leader said during 2001-2004, food containers imported from Japan which were supposed to be distributed among the public during a drought were stalled due to such obstacles.

He called on the Prime Minister to ensure such obstacles will not hinder the import of essential medicines.

MP Premadasa said not only medicines but essential medical equipment valued at Rs.37 million will also be imported through the opposition’s programme.

Responding, Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe conveyed his appreciation to the Leader of the Opposition and the Samagi Jana Balawegaya for fulfilling the government’s request.

Prime Minister Wickremesinghe said the Deputy Leader of the United National Party Ruwan Wijewardene will coordinate matters with the Opposition Leader on administrative obstacles until a state official can be appointed to address such concerns.
