Bus services hampered due to the fuel crisis

(UTV | COLOMBO) – The All Island Private Bus Owners Federation says bus services will be restricted from today due to the prevailing fuel crisis.

The Chief Secretary of the Federation Anjana Priyanjith said only 20 percent of the 18,000 buses will be in operation.

Priyanjith warned that over 95 percent of buses will be out of operation by Monday.

He said a majority of buses in operation at present are short-distance buses adding over 90 percent of long distance buses have been withdrawn due to the lack of diesel.

The Chief Secretary said a full tank amounting to 200 litres was utilized for days adding only short-distance trips can be made with the remaining fuel.

Priyanjith called on the Minister of Transport and other officials to take necessary steps to provide fuel for private buses adding failure to do so will see 600,000 individuals in the sector lose livelihoods.

He said the Minister nor have any officials held discussions with private bus owners’ associations thus far.
